Nevel Tells Archer “The Truth”

Nevel Tells Archer “The Truth”
Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour / Wilmington, NC

by Lea Andrews

A late loss at the March 6-7 stop of the Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina tour did nothing to slow down Larry Nevel. “The Truth” rebounded to top the tough field that gathered at Break Time Billiards in Wilmington, NC, for the $1,000-added event.

After handing Nevel his 7-4 loss, Keith Bennett moved into the hot seat match against Johnny Archer, who’d just shut out Trey Greene. Archer claimed the hot seat 7-3, while Bennett moved over to semifinals. On the west side, an early victim of Nevel’s, Michael “Bulldawg” Fuller, notched a 7-4 win over Zach Wilson and a shut-out win over Greene to reach the quarterfinals. Meanwhile, another one of Nevel’s victims, Shawn “Big Bubba” Putnam, who’d reached the finals in each of his three Jacoby appearances so far, found his streak come to an end at his fourth event as he faced Nevel once again. Nevel dropped Putnam into fifth 7-2 to meet back up with Fuller, and another 7-2 win put him into the semifinals against Bennett. Earning his revenge 7-3, Nevel advanced to the single race-to-11 final match.

Though Archer got out to a 3-0 and 5-1 lead, Nevel was able to take advantage of a scratch on the break and a dry break to gain momentum and tie it up at six games apiece, but when he made nothing on the break in the next rack, Archer regained the lead 7-6. It was his last lead, though. Another scratch on the break allowed Nevel to tie it up, and two more racks in a row put him on the hill 10-7. Archer marked up the next rack, but after pocketing three balls on the break in the final rack, he found himself without a shot on the 2 ball. Archer’s well-played safety left Nevel hooked, but Nevel’s unbelievable kick shot put the 2 ball in the pocket and left the path to the 9 ball open. Nevel pocketed the rest of the balls to earn his victory 11-8.

Nevel also took first in Friday’s 16-entrant early bird tournament, earning $150 for his 7-1 win in the finals over Zach Wilson, who took home $95. Hindu Williams earned $50 for third, while Kenny Chin earned $25 for fourth. Patty Sutherland won the ladies’ division on Saturday, while Caleb Grissom topped the juniors’. In Sunday’s second chance event, Kenny Chin earned $80 for edging out Barry Irving 7-6, while Irving earned $20. Karl Deweese took home $80 for beating out five others in the break contest, and CJ Genta became the owner of a new Jacoby Custom Cue after her name was drawn in the raffle.

A late loss at the March 6-7 stop of the Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina tour did nothing to slow down Nevel.

Reyes and Fisher Named Billiard Players of the Decade

Reyes and Fisher Name Billiard Players of the Decade

Efren Reyes, who amassed nearly $1.7 million in prize money, and Allison Fisher, who won 27 Women’s Professional Billiard Association Classic Tour titles, were named Player of the Decade by the United States Billiard Media Association, the USBMA announced today.

Reyes, the 55-year-old Filipino sensation, won more than 20 major men’s professional pool titles during the decade, starting with his $30,000 Camel Pro 8-Ball Championship win in 2000. Of his 22 major victories, the versatile Reyes won four one-pocket crowns, four 8-ball titles and 14 9-ball titles. He also won the Derby City All- Around title three times.

But it was during the short-lived International Pool Tour that Reyes scored his biggest wins. In three multi-million dollar events, Reyes won two titles (2005 IPT King of the Hill and 2006 IPT North American Open) and pocketed $765,000.

Reyes and Fisher captured the top honors in the Player of the Decade voting held by the USBMA.

Fisher, meanwhile, continued her dominance over women’s pool for a second straight decade. After winning 26 Classic Tour titles during the ’90s, the former snooker champion added 27 more from 2000-2010. In addition to her WPBA Classic Tour titles, Fisher, 41, earned the gold medal at the 2009 World Games, was the 2000 BCA U.S. Open 14.1
champion and won the Tournament of Champions five times. She earned $637,000 over the 10-year span.

Additionally, both Reyes and Fisher were elected into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame during the decade, with Reyes being inducted in 2003 and Fisher in 2009.
In Player of the Decade voting, Reyes out-pointed Johnny Archer, Mika Immonen and Ralf Souquet. Fisher was named woman player of the decade on all but two ballots, with Karen Corr and Jasmin Ouschan each receiving one vote.

Day Two of the World Team Championships

January 31, 2010 Billiard News Comments Off

Day Two of the World Team Championships

On the second day of the World Team Championships in Hanover/Germany, most of the seeded teams had their first appearance. The Philippines, with two-time world champ Ronnie Alcano; Germany 1 with the reigning 8-ball world champion, Ralf Souquet; and the Britain team, with Darren Appleton, finally entered the arena.

But the first highlight of the day was definitely the match between Czech Republic and Korea. After being down 0:3 the players from Prague had a great comeback and tied the score, so the Shoot-Out had to decide. Korea was up 5:2 and just need one more point, but the Czech team came back again and won 8:6 in a very exciting match.

Denmark also needed the Shoot-Out to win the match against the young guns from Hungary.

In less than two and a half hours, the Philippines had won 4:0 against the second team from Great Britain. Every single match was quite close, but in the end it was Alcano & Co. to win 4:0. With the same results the German squad with Thorsten Hohmann and Souquet reached the next round. Team Serbia had no chance to make a point against the well-supported Germans.

Although the final result of 4:1 for the Chinese quartet sounds lopsided, quite clearly the match against Germany 2 was thrilling for the spectators. Germany was down 0:3 as Oliver Ortmann kept his team alive by besting Li He-Wen 8:6 in 9-Ball. In the final two 10-ball games Ortmann was up the whole match until he scratched in the deciding game. At the same time Dominic Jentsch was on the winning road after being down 0:4. Too bad for the local heroes from Hanover.

Appleton is looking to lead the Britain Team to glory.

Tomorrow evening at 6:00 p.m. CET the U.S. boys will enter the tournament. Johnny Archer and his teammates are in a good mood and looking forward to their first appearance at the WTC. Straight pool world champ Stephanè Cohen and his friends are already waiting for that very promising clash.
