Tri State Tour / East Rutherford, NJ

Guy Iannuzzi joined the limited ranks of players who’ve won multiple times on the Tri-State Tour by completing a third undefeated day at the tour’s most recent stop April 26. The $500-added, B-D handicapped event, held at Castle Billiards in East Rutherford, NJ, drew 29 entrants.

While Iannuzzi gave up only one rack in his opening three matches, the competition heated up in the battle for the hot seat. From among the final four, Iannuzzi held off Ryan McCarthy in a 7-5 win, as Alex Rojas sent Raj Vannala west in a hill-hill struggle. Iannuzzi then sent Rojas to the semifinals 7-4 to gain the hot seat.

On the one-loss side, Cory Sohlman was there waiting for McCarthy, while Vannala faced Phil Carr. Sohlman dropped McCarthy into the tie for fifth place 6-4, as Vannala advanced to the quarterfinals with a 7-2 win over Carr. Vannala then defeated Sohlman 8-6 for a second chance against Rojas in the semifinals. Vannala came out strong and with a 7-2 win, advanced to take on Iannuzzi.

Vannala and Ianuzzi battled back and forth, exchanging the lead three times in the finals. At hill-hill, the struggle culminated with Iannuzzi completing his third undefeated day on the Tri-State Tour since last September.

Bresino Double-Dips Pettipiece in the Desert
Desert Classic Tour / Tucson, AZ

Gus Bresino completed an undefeated weekend with two victories over Bernie Pettipiece to capture first place in the Desert Classic Tour’s 14.1 tournament on the weekend of April 4-5. The $1,000-added straight pool event drew 31 participants to Pockets Billiards in Tucson, AZ.

Bresino and Pettipiece first met in the hot seat match after Bresino had defeated Andy Kachur 100-24 and Pettipiece had sent Susan Williams west 100-27. Bresino continued to dominate, repeating his 100-24 performance against Kachur with a win over Pettipiece that left him in the hot seat.

Peter Lhotka, after victories over Jeff Webb and Babe Towsend, was waiting for Kachur. Mike Pankof got by Timmy Mendoza and Tres Kane for the right to meet Williams. Lhotka and Pankoff dropped Kachur and Williams into the tie for fifth place and then squared off against each other in the quarterfinals. Pankoff downed Lhotka 100-54 and then ran into a determined Pettipiece, who defeated him by the same 100-54 score.

Though Pettipiece was able to double the number of balls he’d sunk in the hot seat match, it wasn’t enough to hold off Bresino in the extended race to 125 balls in the finals. Bresino completed his undefeated weekend with a 125-48 win over Pettipiece, and in addition to his first place prize, he earned an extra $100 from Breakball Promotions for recording the weekend’s longest run. Bresino’s run of 71 balls won the prize by a single ball over Jimmy Mendoza.

Men's Play Continues as Women's Begins

The Race is on at Super Billiards Expo

by InsidePOOL Staff

The Diamond Open 10-Ball Professional Players Championship is in the homestretch as the remaining players fight to be one of the final three to return for Sunday’s matches. The winners’ bracket has winnowed down to four undefeated players with two rounds left to play through in the evening, while the one-loss side is still hard at work.

In the winners’ side matches, defending champion Shane Van Boening and past champ Corey Deuel went head to head in an epic battle that saw the players trade game for game. At one point Deuel gained a two-rack lead over Van Boening when the “South Dakota Kid” missed an easy 8 ball. But Deuel’s lead disintegrated as he fouled on a kick attempt, which saw Van Boening take that rack, and then the following game saw Van Boening make an astonishing four balls on the break and have a perfect 3-10 combo set up for him to knot the score at 8.

The Women's tournament kicked off tonight with 16 top woman players including, Fisher, Rousey, Shaw and Steinman.

Diamond Player’s Championship 10-Ball tournament brackets

Deuel reached the hill first after a jump shot battle over the 2 ball left him a dicey run-out, but Van Boening had a chance to tie it up in the next. He broke and made a ball but had no shot on the 1. He pushed out, and Deuel left the 1 on the side rail with a tricky cut. Van Boening managed to pocket the 1 but scratched in the side, and Deuel was left with ball in hand and an easy table to clear for the win 10-8.

Ralf Souquet and young gun Oscar Dominguez had another lengthy match that saw the score reach 8 apiece before Dominguez took the hill. It was his break in the final rack, and he managed to pull out the 10-8 victory. The other two winners’ side matches saw John “Mr. 403″ Schmidt advance over young German Dominic Jentsch 10-7, and Charlie Bryant sent Al Lapena to the one-loss side 10-5.

In the one-loss side, Mike Davis fell to Shawn Putnam in a hill-hill match, while Charlie Williams ousted Mika Immonen 10-4. Putnam plays Al Lapena, and Williams meets Jentsch. Van Boening will have to play Thorsten Hohmann next, who just bested Frankie Hernandez 10-8. Marcus Chamat, who just eliminated Rodney Morris 10-2, will play Souquet.

WPA and Dragon Promotions Announce Women’s World Ten Ball Sanctioning

The World Pool-Billiard Association (WPA) is pleased to announce that it has sanctioned the upcoming Dragon Promotion’s event as the WPA Women’s World 10-Ball Championship. A lot of good will come about from this event, not only by establishing another world championship event for women, but to help strengthen the women’s international program. The WPA has five major events available for women this year, starting with the Amway World 9-Ball Open in Taiwan 26 April – 3 May; followed by the Philippine Open in Manila 26 – 31 May; then the Women’s World 10-Ball Championship in Manila 1-6 June; the China Open in Shanghai 8 – 14 June; then the Women’s World 9-Ball Championship in China, 28 September – 4 October.

The WPA is pleased to announce that it has sanctioned the upcoming Dragon Promotion's event as the WPA Women’s World 10-Ball Championship.

The WPA is pleased to announce that it has sanctioned the upcoming Dragon Promotion's event as the WPA Women’s World 10-Ball Championship.

Ian Anderson, President of the WPA states: “I am very pleased that we were able to sanction this event. It is a great boost for women’s pool, and will help with the establishment of the Ranking List for women, just the same as has been introduced this year for men. We certainly appreciate the efforts of Dragon Promotions through their two principles, Charlie Williams and Cindy Lee, for the earnest effort they are putting into women’s pool.”

Cindy Lee, President of Dragon Promotions, added: “We at Dragon Promotions appreciate the hard work put forth by both entities in making this into a sanctioned event. This was truly a step in the right direction in helping Billiards grow in these tough times.”

This is a great opportunity for the women who can come to Manila for the Philippine Open, play the following week in the Women’s World 10-Ball Championship and then across to China for the inaugural China Open.
