Hatch Back on Top of Joss Billiards Event

Hatch Back on Top of Joss Tour
Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour / Amsterdam, NY

by Lea Andrews

Recent Mosconi Cup MVP Dennis Hatch may have briefly fallen from grace at the last Joss Northeast 9-Ball Tour stop, but at the February 20-21 stop, he proved the fall was only temporary. Hatch topped the field of 44 that gathered for the $2,000-added event, which was held at Main St. Billiards in Amsterdam, NY.

Hatch edged out last stop’s winner Chris Orme 9-8 to reach the hot seat match against Dan Heidrich, who’d come out on top of his own hill-hill match against Kevin Guimond. Hatch took control of the set 9-6 to claim the hot seat and push Heidrich into the semifinals.

On the left side of the bracket, tournament director Mike Zuglan, who’d earlier taken a 9-7 loss to Hatch, had been blazing his way through the field. A 9-2 blowout over Tom Acciavatti put him up against Paul Dryden, who’d breezed past Jared Zimmerman 9-2. After taking care of Dryden 9-5, Zuglan moved on to Guimond. Meanwhile, Dave Grau eked out a win over Mike Dechaine 9-8 to face Dave Fernandez, who’d held Paul Rozonewski to five games. Fernandez managed just four against Grau, though, and landed in seventh while Grau moved on to Orme, who had his eyes on another stint in the finals. A 9-6 victory over Grau pushed Orme into the quarterfinals against Zuglan, who’d eased past Guimond 9-3. Both Zuglan and Orme were looking for the rematch with Hatch, and though Zuglan fought hard for it, it was Orme who got himself one step closer 9-6, and another 9-6 win over Heidrich in the semifinals put him there.

It seemed like a second set wouldn’t be needed in the true double-elimination final match as Hatch got out to a comfortable 7-3 lead, but Orme stormed back into the match, keeping the string to himself and pushing the second set 9-7. The two powerhouses stayed even at first, tying up at four games apiece, but once Hatch managed to pull away a little bit, he stayed there, earning his fourth Joss win this season 9-7.

Hatch topped the field of 44 that gathered for the $2,000-added event, which was held at Main St. Billiards in Amsterdam, NY.

Parica Leads the Way at Jay Swanson Memorial

Parica Leads the Way at Jay Swanson Memorial

14th Annual Jay Swanson Memorial Tournament / Hollywood, CA

by Lea Andrews

While some people may be feeling the heat of Valentine’s Day evening, Jose Parica is feeling the heat of the hot seat of the 14th Annual Jay Swanson Memorial 9-Ball Tournament. The $4,000-added event, which features a $15,520 total prize purse, drew 192 players to Hollywood Billiards in Hollywood, CA, February 13-14.

Parica, who finished fourth in last year’s event, plowed his way into the hot seat match with wins over Louis Ulrich 8-4, Greg Gerado 8-4, and hill-hill over Marshall Young, who was coming off an 8-5 win over Bernardo “King Kong” Chavez. Waiting for Parica in the hot seat match was Wayne Pullen, who’d notched back-to-back hill-hill victories over Sal Butera and Butch Carba to meet up with Marcus Rodriguez, who’d notched his own hill-hill win over Bryan Parks. But after sailing past Rodriguez 8-1, Pullen found himself on the wrong end of another 8-1 match as Parica tossed him over to the semis.

Still alive on the left side of the bracket is Butera, who rebounded from his loss to Pullen by ousting his own protégé, 14-year-old CSI Junior Master Brenden Crockett. After backing that win up with a 7-3 victory over Ulrich, Butera flew by Parks 7-2 and last year’s runner-up Oscar Dominguez 7-4. Dominguez, who’d just knocked out Abe Lim 7-2 and Carba 7-1, landed in seventh this year. Meanwhile, Gerado was making a run for a rematch with Parica, winning 7-3 over Dane Elmstead, who’d just edged out Corey Harper 7-6, to face Chavez, who’d taken care of Nick Spano 7-6. Gerado flipped that score on Chavez, putting him in seventh 7-6, but then the score got flipped on him, and his hopes of meeting back up with Parica ended as he landed in fifth courtesy of Rodriguez. Rodriguez will battle it out in the quarterfinals with Butera, who got past Young 7-5, and the winner will earn the rematch with Pullen in the semifinals.

Day One of the World Team Championships

Day One of the World Team Championships

courtesy of Global Cuesports Touch Magazine

Yesterday evening one of the biggest pool tournaments that was ever held in Europe started. Around 40 teams and 200 players from all over the world attended for the first World Team Championship in Hanover, Germany, and 16 of them have already finished their first matches.

Overall 32 K-Steel II tables are arranged in one of the biggest halls of the Hanover Fair. Sixteen of them are in an arena for more than 3,000 spectators, whilst the other sixteen are practice tables in between the billiards exhibition that also is taking place. Besides that, there are two more fairs—one of them is a large Harley Davidson exhibition with beautiful and expensive Harleys—so it is secured that thousands of people have the possibility to watch the matches and take a look at the billiards exhibition.

Whilst teams like the Philippines, USA, Germany 1, and also The Netherlands didn’t play yesterday, the most exciting match was certainly Team Canada versus Germany 2 with Oliver Ortmann and teen sensation Dominic Jentsch. After more than four hours, it was finally Ortmann who secured the win for his team against Jason Klatt, who failed to finish the match as he missed two shots right at the end. Jentsch played probably the best match of the whole day as he dominated Tyler Edey with an impressing 7-1 win in 10-ball.

The information seems to indicate that there will not be a live stream during the week. Maybe a team from Cueball Vision will show up soon and record some matches. It is not clear yet how they will be broadcasted.
