Moore Takes Pechauer Billiards Tour

Single-Game Final Falls to Moore
J. Pechauer Southeast Open 9-Ball Tour / Charlotte, NC

by Skip Maloney

Steve “The Knife” Moore came back from a hill-hill hot seat match defeat to take a single-game final against him at the J. Pechauer Southeast 9-Ball Tour’s May 3 stop. The $1,000-added event drew a field of only nine entrants to Paradise Billiards in Charlotte, NC.

After an opening round that elicited a winners’ side final four, Moore initially met up with Mike Davis as Park squared off against Dugsy Norris. All three matches that left Park in the hot seat were hill-hill affairs, with Moore over Davis, Park over Norris, and ultimately Park over Moore.

On the one-loss side, Katie Cowan and Jeff Abernathy were there to meet Davis and Norris. Davis got by Cowan 9-2, as Abernathy bested Norris 9-5. Davis then dropped Abernathy into fourth place and had a shot at Moore in the semifinals. Moore advanced back to the finals with a 9-7 win over Davis.

Moore and Park decided to bypass the scheduled race to 11 and make it a single-game contest for top prize, which didn’t work well for Park. Moore broke the rack, ran the balls, and took home the first-place prize.

Lombardo and Bauries Win Pechauer Billiard Events

Lombardo and Bauries Bring Home Honors
J. Pechauer Southeast 9-Ball Tour / Vero Beach, FL

by Skip Maloney

Hunter Lombardo and Matt Bauries won the open and amateur events, respectively, of the J. Pechauer Southeast 9-Ball Tour stop the weekend of February 28-March 1. The $1,000-added open event attracted 27 entrants to Cunningham’s Pool & Darts in Vero Beach, FL, while the concurrent $500-added amateur event drew 31 entrants.

From among the winners’ side final four in the open event, Lombardo started the last leg of his undefeated weekend with a shut-out victory over Tony O’Donnell that put him into the hot seat match versus Rich Johnson. Johnson had just sent tour director Tommy Kennedy west with a 9-6 win and then followed him over when Lombardo gained the hot seat 9-1.

Adam Wheeler and Jim Sandaler were waiting on the one-loss side for O’Donnell and Kennedy. Kennedy survived a hill-hill battle against Wheeler, as Sandaler got by O’Donnell slightly easier at 9-7. Kennedy must have had enough of close calls because he proceeded to oust Sandaler 9-1 in the quarterfinals and shut out Johnson to meet Lombardo in the finals.

Kennedy ended up winning twice as many games as either of Lombardo’s previous two opponents, but Lombardo took an early 3-0 lead that he never relinquished. The two traded games through the middle of the match, but Lombardo reached the hill having widened his lead by a fourth game and then closed it out at 11-6.

In the amateur event, which finished late Sunday night, Matt Bauries defeated Jeff Mabry in the finals 7-4. Trevor Moore finished third and Prescott Buckwold ended up in fourth place.

Black Comes Back in Pechauer Billiard Finals

J. Pechauer Southeast 9-Ball Tour / Gulfport, MS

by Skip Maloney

Mike Black took tour director Tommy Kennedy to the bitter double-hill end in the finals of the J. Pechauer Southeast 9-Ball Tour January 24-25. Black prevailed in the $1,000-added event that drew 26 entrants to Skeeter’s Billiards in Gulfport, MS.

Black and Kennedy were among the final four on the winners’ side of the open event on Saturday, but Kennedy went west on the heels of 9-5 victory by Bill Dunsmore. Black, in the meantime, bested Kevin Duffy 9-6 and then gained the hot seat with an identical 9-6 win over Dunsmore.

Kennedy and Duffy moved over to take on Jason Breland and Morty Davis, who would both end up in the tie for fifth place. Kennedy and Duffy squared off in the quarterfinals, in which Kennedy prevailed 9-4. Kennedy avenged his earlier defeat versus Dunsmore by besting him in the semifinals 9-4 and earning a shot against Black in the finals.

Black took an early 2-0 lead in the finals, and the two traded racks back and forth to 6-4. At that point, Black surged ahead, reaching the hill first. Kennedy responded with a four pack of his own to knot things at double-hill. Kennedy broke and was midway through the rack when he scratched shooting at the 5 ball. Black took over and finished it to capture the first-place prize.

In a $500-added amateur event that drew 30 players Sunday, Jason Moran took first place, defeating Kevin Duffy in the finals 7-5. Glen Kelly finished in third place, with Josh Charbonnet in fourth. David Walters and Stacy Toomer tied for fifth place.

Davis Launches Season With Jacoby Win

Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour / Rocky Mount, NC

by Skip Maloney

Mike Davis followed up a win at the Reno Open in the tail end of 2008 with a victory on the Jacoby Custom Cues Carolina Tour. Davis went undefeated through a field of 27 entrants on hand for the $1,000-added event, hosted by Sharks & Shooters in Rocky Mount, NC, the weekend of January 23-25.

Davis started his final drive among the winners’ side final four with a 7-4 victory over Russell Sasser that put him in the hot seat match versus Steven Page. Page had sent Sidney Champion west with a 7-3 win. Davis got out in front and on the hill 6-3 in the hot seat match that followed, but Page fought back to tie it. Page made two balls on the subsequent break but lost control of the table shortly thereafter, opening the door for Davis to advance.

Michael Fuller was working his way back to the finals from the west side. He was waiting for Champion after a 7-1 victory over Phillip Richardson and a 7-4 win over Chad Pike. Leroy Bryant got by Chris Vollmar and Chris Bruner for the right to meet Sasser. It was Fuller and Bryant advancing to the quarterfinals after that, with Fuller prevailing 7-4 to take on Page in the semifinals. Fuller dominated that match 7-2 and turned his attention to Davis.

Fuller used some of the momentum he’d built up over his last five matches to take an early lead and was ahead by three at the end of the ninth game. His sixth win proved to be his last, as Davis caught up and moved past him to win it 9-3.

In a concurrent juniors’ event, which drew eight entrants, Chris Bruner took home the $50 first prize after defeating Andrew Coley 7-4 in the finals. In the ladies’ event, Katie Cowan defeated Karen Webb 7-2 in the finals and brought home a $40 first prize. Prior to his second-place finish in the open event, Fuller took home a $125 prize for first place in the Friday mini tournament that drew 14, besting Russell Sasser 7-2 in the finals. Sidney Champion placed third in the same event. Trey Sprye finished in fourth place.

Price and Tabet Combine on J. Pechauer Stop

Price and Tabet Combine on J. Pechauer Stop
J. Pechauer Southeast 9-Ball Tour / Atlanta, GA

Larry Price won the J. Pechauer event at Mr. Cues II in Atlanta, GA.

Larry Price won the J. Pechauer event at Mr. Cues II in Atlanta, GA.

Larry Price returned to the winning ways he’d established earlier this year with a January win in Louisville at the Derby City Classic Banks Division by completing an undefeated trip among 20 entrants in the $1,000-added open division of the J. Pechauer Southeast 9-Ball Tour, held December 13. On Sunday, December 14, in the $500-added amateur division of the same event, Jeff Tabet, who finished in a tie for fifth in the open event, completed his own undefeated journey through 20 amateur entrants. The event was hosted by Mr. Cues II in Atlanta, GA

From among the winners’ side final four on Saturday, Price started the final three legs of his journey to victory by shutting Tabet out and sending him to the one-loss side battle for fifth place. Tommy Kennedy, in the meantime, was busy sending Jesse Middlebrook to the same fate 7-2. By the same score, Price sent Kennedy to the semifinals.

It was Clint McCullough who ended Tabet’s open bid with a 7-5 win, as Cliff Joyner defeated Middlebrook 7-3. In the quarterfinal match that followed, Joyner had a 6-3 lead going into the tenth game, but McCullough took command and won the next four to move into the semifinals against Kennedy. Kennedy and McCullough struggled back and forth through the early stages of that semifinal match, until a few missed shots sealed Kennedy’s fate and McCullough turned his attention to Price.

Like Kennedy, McCullough battled in the finals but missed some critical shots near the end of the match. Price won it 9-7 to capture the first-place prize.

In the amateur event, Tabet was among the final four there, as well. He shut out Evan Beeson to move into the hot seat match and then sent Duane Bourgeois to the semifinals. David Shannon, who’d been sent west by Bourgeois from among the winners’-side final four defeated Beeson 4-2 in the quarterfinals but fell in his rematch against Bourgeois by the same score. Tabet wasted little time in the finals, finishing ahead by four racks and capturing the first-place prize.
